On China’s Yunnan-Tibet line with an altitude difference of more than 1,000 meters, we deeply tested two models of BYD Han EV’s ultra-long-endurance version of the premium model and the four-wheel drive high-performance version of the flagship model.
The test drive route is from Lijiang City, Yunnan Province to Shangri-La City. The whole route involves road scenes such as expressways, tunnels, national highways and winding mountain highways, and has experienced sunny, rainy and foggy weather. The prices of the test drive models Han EV Super Long Range Edition Premium and Four-Wheel Drive High Performance Edition Flagship are priced at US$3,974.67 and US$4,340.69 respectively.

The air conditioner is turned on throughout the process, and the cruising range increases.
Before the start of the test drive trip, BYD officially introduced its NEDC cruising range, which is the actual cruising range. “NEDC’s standard is not to turn on the air conditioner during the whole process, but we can turn on the air conditioner throughout the process.”
When we tested the long-endurance two-wheel drive model, we found that the vehicle mileage and the displayed consumption mileage are basically 1:1. Among them, the air-conditioning temperature throughout the process is 19-22°C, the navigation function is turned on, and the kinetic energy recovery is turned on to the maximum. During the driving process, the 100-kilometer acceleration performance, intelligent voice, entertainment applications, etc. were also tested.
The most impressive thing is that when we drove the four-wheel drive high-performance version from Lijiang City (about 2,459 meters above sea level) to Ganhaizi in Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (about 3,100 meters above sea level), the dial showed that there was only 8% of the battery left. Travel 28 kilometers. But Ganhaizi is about 31 kilometers away from downtown Lijiang.
On the return trip, with 4 people and 7 pieces of luggage (3 suitcases and 4 backpacks), turn on the ECO mode (energy-saving mode) and use greater kinetic energy recovery for driving. The cruising range will not decrease but increase, up to 52 kilometers . After arriving at the destination with the air conditioner and navigation turned on, the remaining mileage is displayed as 38 kilometers.
According to BYD, this is due to its kinetic energy recovery function. The Bosch IPB integrated braking control system equipped with Han recovers 10% more braking energy than ordinary braking systems. And when the ACC adaptive cruise is turned on, it also has the ability to recover braking energy. The low-drag calipers it is equipped with can reduce energy loss by 0.2kWh per 100 kilometers. “So the downhill road basically does not consume mileage.”
The power battery of BYD Han EV is BYD’s self-developed blade battery. Its space utilization rate is more than 50% higher than that of traditional battery packs, and the battery capacity reaches 76.9kWh. According to Sun Huajun, deputy general manager of BYD’s Fudi Battery, the blade battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in 33 minutes. It supports electric vehicles to accelerate from 100 kilometers to 3.9 seconds, and to charge and discharge more than 3,000 times. It can guarantee that electric vehicles can travel 1.2 million kilometers.
In addition, according to BYD, the double-silver coated glass used by Han can block more than 99% of ultraviolet rays and more than 85% of infrared rays, and the solar energy blocking rate can reach more than 50%.
Overall, the battery life of the long battery life version is relatively stable. The four-wheel drive high-performance version has fast acceleration and obvious kinetic energy recovery effect. Strong power reserve capacity makes the whole driving process easier. During the test drive, except for the rapid decline in power when climbing a hill, there is no mileage anxiety problem that the faster the speed of other electric vehicles, the faster the power loss.
Four-Screen Linkage, Intelligent Entertainment
Voice control is seen as the primary means of in-car interaction in smart cars. The DiLink 3.0 intelligent network connection system carried by BYD Han EV has mainly upgraded the intelligent voice system compared with the past. Using HKUST Xunfei speech recognition technology to realize multi-person interaction, child voice recognition, and sound source location.
When the driver issues commands such as window opening, seat ventilation, and seat heating. The intelligent voice will open the windows on the driver’s side, seat ventilation and heating functions, and vice versa for the co-driver. During the test drive, the sound source localization function showed zero errors.
There are 4 controllable screens inside the four-wheel drive high-performance version of the vehicle. They are the instrument panel, the 15.6-inch ultra-high-definition 8-core adaptive rotating suspension PAD, the air-conditioning control screen under the armrest of the front seats, and the 7-inch full LCD PAD on the armrest of the rear seats. The long-endurance front-drive version has 3 screens, and there is no PAD screen on the rear armrest.
What is impressive is that the 7-inch full LCD PAD of the rear BOSS car can basically adjust all the car settings except the main driver. Including the air conditioner of the whole car, the color and brightness of the ambient light, music switching and volume adjustment, the position and ventilation and heating of the co-pilot and rear seats, the switch of the sunroof and sunshade, etc.
Taking into account the individual needs of car owners, the 15.6-inch pad and instrument panel in the front row have skin-changing functions. The new DiUI is mainly based on traditional Chinese elements. There are more than 20 sets of themed skins. The ECO mode and the SPORT mode have different colors. The former has a bluish tint and the latter has a reddish tint. The newly added negative screen can directly check the driving mileage, driving time, power consumption and remaining flow, etc.
In this test, the car is equipped with a customized version of Huawei P40, which can currently control the doors and windows. It is a pity that I failed to experience the HiCar system. BYD said: Huawei HiCar is expected to start OTA to mass-produced models in September.
The PAD large screen supports split-screen display, and there are three display options: 1:1, 1:2, and 2:1. Using split-screen mode to display navigation while displaying entertainment applications during driving can well avoid driving interference to the main driver.
In terms of intelligent driving assistance systems, this test vehicle did not open all functions. We mainly experienced the ACC-S&G stop-and-go full-speed adaptive cruise system and lane keeping system. This function can be turned on and adjusted through the button and dial on the left side of the steering wheel. After the adaptive cruise control system is turned on, you can choose the distance you want to keep from the vehicle in front. The lane keeping system will vibrate the steering wheel to remind the driver when leaving the lane without turning on the turn signal.
The full version of the DiPilot intelligent driving assistance system carried by BYD Han EV. Including DiDAS driving assistance technology and DiTrainer coaching mode. The former includes more than 11 functions including stop-and-go full-speed adaptive cruise system, curve speed control, pedestrian recognition/protection, active lane keeping, intelligent high and low beams, and intelligent traffic sign recognition system. OTA upgrades can also be performed later. The Han EV super long-endurance version of the premium model and the four-wheel drive high-performance version of the flagship model have additional functions, which can be upgraded to APA full-scenario automatic parking.
The DiTrainer coaching mode can selectively turn on the assisted driving function according to the evaluation of factors such as driving behavior, road conditions, weather and even driving age. In addition, Han EV also has a super biochemical mode, equipped with a filter with a filtration efficiency of 95%, negative ion adsorption, and accurate detection of PM2.5 inside and outside the car to purify the air in the car.
